Press Releases July 5, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE An Act of Global Proportions at the Frank Erwin Center! The Turbocharged Torres Brothers Attempt A Record-Shattering FIVE Motorcycles in the Claustrophobic Confines of the 16-Foot Globe of Death!
AUSTIN, TX- Natives of Caaguazú, Paraguay, the Torres Brothers consist of five brothers and two cousins ranging in age from 17 to 32 years old. The only daredevils in the world ever to attempt this act with five motorcycles, the Torres Brothers have performed in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile in such renowned circuses as Circo Nacional de España, Circo Hermanos Muños, Circo del Sol, and Circo Tejedos. "They start their act where other circus families end," says daredevil clown Bello, who introduces the turbocharged Torres Brothers as they attempt to load a record-shattering five motorcycles into the claustrophobic confines of the sixteen-foot steel sphere known as The Globe Of Death. "I've performed inside the Globe before... but I won't get inside of it with them!" Inside the perilous steel sphere, five red and yellow 125cc Suzukis and 100cc Hondas reach speeds of up to 65 miles per hour, precariously orbiting within mere inches of each other. "The most challenging part of the act is keeping the speed of the bikes consistent," says Ricardo Vera Torres in Guarani (Paraguayan), speaking through a translator. "If we're not all keeping pace, it can get pretty dangerous in there." As first one, then a second, a third, and finally an unprecedented fifth motorcycle enters the lethal, imposing black structure of curved steel, how does the team of brave motorcyclists signal to one another? "Francisco has a high-pitched whistle that we can hear above the roar of the crowd and the bikes," says Felix Vera Torres, the youngest member of the troupe. "We also give each other cues by revving our bikes at key moments during the act." The result: one of the most visually astounding, heart-stopping acts ever performed in Ringling Bros.' illustrious 133-year history!
