Maze

Set to Bring Unique R&B sound to the Theatre at The Frank Erwin Center

line

Maze is often described as “the best kept secret in the music industry.” The reason for this is that although the group has never won any awards, they continue to attract sold out crowds. For over 30 years, Maze has created a distinctive, soulful and powerful sound that is as unique as Austin itself.

Maze was founded by Frankie Beverly in 1976 when he moved from his hometown of Philadelphia to San Francisco. Since then, the group has produced innovative albums and released hit singles year after year including “Running Away,” “Back In Stride” and “Silky Soul.” The All Music Guide wrote “Frankie Beverly and Maze may be the ultimate urban contemporary group, though they’re much more soulful and funky than many of their counterparts.” Maze defines funk with their rhythmic drums and bass guitar combined with melodic riffs of the electric guitar. The songs are sure to get your hands clapping and seeing them live will only add to the excitement.

Maze’s consistent success over the years can be attributed to nearly 30 hit singles and eight of their 10 albums being certified gold. Beverly reflected on how the group can stay grounded in their music even with all of the band’s success. “By the time we started being successful, we were ready and we didn’t get overwhelmed or caught up in all that ‘star’ stuff. I was just thankful that people liked our music,” says Beverly. “You see, I would have been happy selling 20,000 or 30,000 albums. To have all these gold records is much more than I ever hoped for.” Beverly has also been instrumental in giving other artists their big break. He states, “I guess beyond what we’ve done with Maze, the second thing I’m most proud of is that we’ve supported other artists. We were the first group to give Natalie Cole a chance during her comeback years (in the mid-’80s). We took Anita Baker out as our opening act on her first national tour and did the same thing with Regina Belle and Toni Braxton...and it makes me feel great to see how each of those artists has gone to have great success.” Beverly’s commitment to the music industry shows in the hard work and dedication he puts into writing, producing and performing.

Maze is starting up another tour after previously touring in 2005. The band is still as popular as ever and should enjoy even greater success on this next tour. “We’ve made it this far because we love and respect ourselves and our fans. But, most importantly, we believe in what we do,” says Beverly. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly will be bringing their exciting funk to The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center on Saturday, May 3. Be sure to get your tickets early as you do not want to miss out on this unique group.
