Austin Wranglers to Play in Tough Southwest Division

line

wranglersThere will be little change in 2008 for fans accustomed to seeing top tier, high-caliber football at Austin Wranglers games. Indeed, fans are likely to see a number of highly competitive match-ups each week at the Frank Erwin Center. The Austin Wranglers are slated to play in what may very well turn out to be one of the toughest divisions in the af2 in 2008 -- the National Conference, Southwest Division.

wranglersThe Southwest Division features a Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings squad that advanced to the National Conference championship game in 2007, before falling to the eventual ArenaCup Champion Tulsa Talons. The Battle Wings posted an 11-5 regular season mark last season under the direction of head coach Jon Norris. On the field, the 2007 Bossier-Shreveport squad was led by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter. The Austin Wranglers will face the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings twice during the 2008 season, including a Saturday, June 7 game in Shreveport and a regular season-ending match-up in Austin on Saturday, July 26.

The Southwest Division also includes a Rio Grande Valley Dorados team that won the division in 2007, with a 15-1 regular season record. The Dorados playoff run was cut short as the team fell to the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings in the division championship game. Rio Grande Valley will visit Austin in the fourth week of the season, a Sunday, April 20 match-up and will host the Wranglers on Saturday, July 19 in the second to last game of the regular season for Austin.

The Corpus Christ Sharks and Texas Copperheads round-out the Southwest Division. The Austin-Corpus Christi games will feature two of Arena Football’s top coaches, including Wranglers head coach Ben Bennett and Sharks head coach Mike Trigg. 2008 marks the second year of play for the Sharks who finished-up the 2007 regular season with a 6-10 record. The Copperheads will also take to the field for the team’s second season after finishing-up with a 2-14 record in 2007. Texas is coached by former Austin Wranglers assistant coach Ollie Guidry, who brings an exemplary coaching record to the Copperheads.
