Austin Wranglers

Arena Football Season In Full-Swing!

1

wranglersThe Austin Wranglers Arena Football team opened the 2008 season at home on March 29th against the Corpus Christi Sharks in a match-up of two of the premier head coaches in Arena Football – Austin’s Ben Bennett, who won an ArenaCup Championship in 2004 and Corpus Christi’s Mike Trigg, who coached the AFL’s Philadelphia Soul during the team’s inaugural season.

wranglersThe month of April will see the Wranglers face four premier af2 opponents, including a Saturday, April 5, game against a Lubbock Renegades squad that, in its second year in the af2, is looking to improve upon the 7-9 record it posted in 2007. The Renegades are coached by former Texas Tech Red Raiders standout Rodney Blackshear, and will be led on the field by fullback/linebacker Freddie Weinke whose cousin Chris Weinke won the Heisman Trophy in 2000.

The Wranglers will hit the road for the first time the following week as the Austin squad faces the Amarillo Dusters at the Amarillo Civic Center. The Dusters, who will also visit Austin in Week 10, are coached by former Austin Wranglers assistant coach Chris MacKeown.

The Rio Grande Valley Dorados visit the Frank Erwin Center on Sunday, April 20, in a much anticipated match-up. The Dorados finished off the 2007 season with a bang, compiling a 15-1 record while winning the Southwest Division Title.

Austin will wrap-up the month of April with a road game against the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. The Yard Dawgz are coached by former NFL stand-out, Gary Reasons.
