Trans-Siberian Orchestra Makes the Holidays Magical

It’s that time of year again. The holiday season is fast approaching and so is the arrival of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. With impressively powerful music, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra has dazzled audiences throughout the nation since its creation in 1996. TSO will once again return to the Frank Erwin Center on December 26 to give Austin a real taste of passionate tunes and great art.
In 1996, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra was founded by Paul O’Neill, Robert Kinkel and Jon Oliva. The group’s name is inspired by the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia. Kinkel says the connection lies in the fact that the Railway connects many cultures otherwise isolated, much like music. The style of music that TSO creates is described as a blend of progressive rock, symphonic metal, and heavy metal, with influences from classical music. The rock orchestra is extremely popular for its renditions of traditional Christmas songs. Initially, this concept of a band playing Christmas carols in a rock opera style was thought to be unheard of, but soon proved to be a huge success with many people, young and old.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s debut album, Christmas Eve and Other Stories, was released in 1996. The album includes the popular Christmas songs with a TSO twist, such as “O Holy Night” and “The First Noel.” Christmas Eve and Other Stories remains TSO’s best selling album. Other well known TSO albums include: The Christmas Attic, Beethoven’s Last Night and The Lost Christmas Eve. They have been working since 2004 on the highly anticipated Night Castle, which is expected to be released sometime at the end of 2007.
In addition to supplying their fans with amazing albums, Trans-Siberian Orchestra also delivers breathtaking tours. Their 2005 tour placed 21st on the list of the most successful concert tours of the year. Each of their live shows is known for their wide use of pyrotechnics, lasers and lights, all of which sync perfectly with the performance. Paul O’Neill says of their upcoming tour as another step towards improvement, “We just keep trying to take it to higher and higher levels. We have all kinds of surprises. We’re working them out right now with the engineers.”
More important than successful albums and electrifying tours, creating an emotional response in their listeners is the main goal of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He feels that “great art--and this is the hardest thing to do--elicits an emotional response from the person who’s exposed to it that they never felt before.” Come to the Frank Erwin Center on December 26 and experience this great art for yourself. It’s the perfect day after Christmas treat!
