On April 19, the city’s best radio and TV talent gathered for the 2nd annual American Women in Radio and Television Trailblazer and Awards of Excellence media gala. With approximately 500 in attendance, we took our place as Frank Erwin Center representatives at a back table with the unassuming nominee.
Leading up to the gala, the initial ballot of nominees was meticulously identified by the awards committee to ensure that it included all members of the media in the Austin area, including advertising agencies and other related organizations. These nominees were then grouped into 16 categories and voted on by over 400 professionals in the industry to arrive at four finalists in each category. The judging process then went national with 19 judges from seven different states reviewing a questionnaire submitted by each entrant.
As the winners were called out one by one, we waited anxiously for the category of Media Buyer of the Year. In one instant it all became clear–Lance’s hard work and great attitude had earned the respect of his peers. With applause and whistles in the background, Lance Dickerson, the only non-advertising nominee, stood up and graciously made the long walk to the front of the room as this year’s American Women in Radio and Television Media Buyer of the Year.
Lance graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising. He started his career with the Frank Erwin Center in 1995 as an usher before moving into a marketing intern role. He became a full-time member of the marketing department in December of 1997 and was promoted to Assistant Marketing Manager in 1999. Liz Land, Marketing Manager for the Frank Erwin Center stated, “Lance is dedicated and committed to his profession and he has grown so much since we were first introduced. We are so happy for his accomplishment and proud that others recognize in him what we have seen for years.”
