Academy Award winning actor and Grammy nominated R&B singer Jamie Foxx will be coming to the Frank Erwin Center on April 28 at 8 p.m. as part of his “Unpredictable Tour.”
Born Eric Bishop, in the small town of Terrell, Texas, on December 13, 1967, Foxx was raised by his grandparents. In his teen years, he had his first taste of the entertainment business as his church’s choir and music director during which time he started his own R&B band. Foxx also formally studied music while he attended school at the U.S. International University in San Diego.
Attending a comedy club in college one night with some friends, Foxx was encouraged to take the stage and perform some impersonations, which proved incredibly popular with the audience. It was at this time his stage name “Jamie Foxx” was created - “I wrote down all these unisex names at this comedy place because they would always choose the girls to go up... So I wrote down Stacy King, Tracy Brown, Jamie Foxx
. . . And they picked Jamie Foxx. I got up, had a great night and that’s how the name stuck.” |
Known mainly for his comedic roles in shows such as “The Jamie Foxx Show” and “In Living Color,” Foxx is also a successful singer and an accomplished musician. In 1994, Foxx released his first album entitled Peep This. However, his true musical success began to shine when Foxx released his second album Unpredictable. It sold over 598,000 copies in its first week of release. After debuting in the first week at number two, Unpredictable rose to the top of the Billboard pop album chart.
With this accomplishment, Foxx became only the fourth artist to win an Academy Award for acting while simultaneously holding the number one spot on the charts. The other three artists to accomplish this feat are Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Barbara Streisand.
