Prestigious Relays Highlight April Track and Field Schedule

 |
The heart of the outdoor track and field regular season for The University of Texas begins during the month of April with one of the most prestigious and exciting meets – The 80th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The Texas Relays are one of three home meets during the course of the season, and is unquestionably the highlight of the Longhorns’ home schedule. The meet, which attracts more than the 20,000-seat capacity at the Mike A. Myers Track and Field Stadium, takes place from April 4-7 in the Lone Star state capital. National and world champions, high school, college and professional athletes take over the area for the four-day span of the meet.
After a week break, UT hosts the Texas Twilight on April 21 to showcase regional talent and continue training for the upcoming Penn Relays in Philadelphia (April 26-28) and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa (April 24-28). The single-day, small-scale meet includes teams from the region, running in one of the largest and best track and field facilities in the nation. |
The Longhorns’ men’s track and field team, under head coach Bubba Thornton, will showcase strong performers at all the meets on the schedule for April of 2007. Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, the Longhorns finished in the top four in the team race at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Senior combined events student-athlete Donovan Kilmartin and senior Andra Manson are in their final seasons on the Forty Acres. They will compete for the final time on their home track at the Texas Twilight. Junior national champion Leo Manzano will join the UT distance medley relay in defending the event championship from 2006.
After a strong indoor season, the Texas women’s track and field team, led by head coach Bev Kearney will continue to face the nation’s best competitors in preparation for the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
The Longhorns’ return after a strong 2006 season in which UT won the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship, and the NCAA Midwest Region Championship.
Senior national champion shot putter Michelle Carter anchors the throws area through the 2007 outdoor season. Sophomore national champion high jumper Destinee Hooker will continue her standout sophomore season as she is scheduled to compete at Texas Relays, Texas Twilight and either the Penn or Drake Relays. Sophomore sprinter Alexandria Anderson and senior All-American Chauntae Bayne round out the top-notch squad, as they are part of the group headed to Drake Relays.
All ticket information for all home track and field meets is available through the Texas Box Office.
