Juan Gabriel

A Latin Music Legend

1

Juan Gabriel

The Frank Erwin Center will experience the music of Mexico this November when Juan Gabriel takes its stage. Born Alberto Aguilera Valadés in 1950 in Michoacán, Mexico, this artist has become one of the most important figures in 20th Century Mexican music. Spanning the genres of Mexican ranchera, ballad, mariachi and pop, music has been Gabriel’s passion for most of his life.

Already a songwriter by the age of 13, Juan Gabriel began his performing career in nightclubs and on local television under the name of Adám Luna. In 1971 he signed a recording contract with RCA records, changed his name to Juan Gabriel, and was on his way to becoming one of Latin music’s biggest stars. Throughout his career, he has worked with leading Latin artists as arranger, producer and songwriter. Gabriel has sold more than 30 million records worldwide, his most popular being Recuerdos Vol. II, which includes what is considered his greatest hit, “Querida” (Lover). Released in 1984, the song remained at the top of the hits chart for more than a year.

His success as a singer and songwriter is due in part to his path in becoming one. “I compose songs with a lot of simplicity because my school has been the streets and people have been my books,” Gabriel explains.

Enjoy this six-time Grammy nominee’s performance at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center on Wednesday, November 8 at 8 p.m.
