George Lopez

April 28

An All Around Entertainer

On Friday, April 28 one of entertainment’s premiere comedians will hit the stage at the Frank Erwin Center. As a co-creator, writer, producer, and star of his own hit TV sitcom, George Lopez has quickly become a sell-out attraction all over the country. You won’t want to miss his highly anticipated “Who Told You That?” tour, so make sure to get your tickets early or you might be left out when the day of the show comes!

Aside from television, Lopez has earned accolades for his work in other forms of media. Lopez’s CD Team Leader was nominated for a 2004 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album and his autobiography, “Why You Crying?” entered the New York Times Bestseller top twenty immediately after its release last May.

Lopez has entertained at sell-out venues across the country and has even performed stand-up for the President at the historic Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. He set an attendance record of over 42,000 at Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles with seven consecutive sold-out performances.

Lopez isn’t just a stand-up comedian though; he’s an all around entertainer. He enjoys performing on stage, film and television! Lopez was cast as a commentator for HBO’s hit sports show Inside the NFL for the 2003-2004 football season. He was also a two-time host for the Latin Grammy Awards and a co-host of the Emmy Awards. Recently, he starred in films such as Naughty or Nice as well as The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl, working with director Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, Sin City, From Dusk Til Dawn). In 2005, Time Magazine recognized Lopez as one of “The 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America.”

Considering Lopez makes his living from making people laugh, he becomes surprisingly serious on the driving range. He participated in both the 2004 Chrysler Bob Hope Classic and the 2004 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. At Pebble Beach, Lopez and his pro partner finished third, making him the top ranking celebrity at completion of the golf tournament!

His first experience playing golf began as a kid, when he would swing at lemons that had fallen from a tree in his backyard. “I’d go in the backyard and I would pull off the green ones that were most shaped like golf balls and hit them into the alley,” Lopez reminisced. “That is how I started to swing the club.” Today, he is the proud owner of a 13-handicap and considers himself both an avid player and fan.

Lopez’s desire to make people smile is no secret, and he has used his gift for making people laugh to help others. The Los Angeles native devotes much of his time to the community. He even has his own charity, The George & Ann Lopez-Richie Alarcon CARE Foundation, which provides significant community and arts resources for education.
