Longhorn Tennis Teams Look Forward
to Challenging for Big 12 and NCAA Championships
Texas
Women’s Tennis
After ending the 2005 season in the NCAA championship match,
falling just short of another NCAA title by losing to No.
1 Stanford, Texas found itself back in the top five early
on this season after
reaching the finals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor
Championships in Madison, Wisconsin in February. Texas
upset three top-15 opponents – Georgia Tech, Miami
and Duke – to reach the finals, where the Longhorns
fell to top-ranked Stanford. Through mid-February, the
Longhorns were ranked No. 3 nationally.
Coach Patty Fendick-McCain, in her first season at the
helm of the Longhorns programafter serving eight seasons
at the University of Washington, welcomes the return of
six letterwinners, including junior Petra Dizdar, a 2005
All-Big 12 selection, and seniors Mia Marovic and Kendra
Strohm. All three were instrumental in leading the Longhorns
to last year’s NCAA runner-up finish.
Texas welcomes non-conference foes Purdue (Sunday, March
5) and Notre Dame (Monday, March 10) to the Penick-Allison
Tennis Center this month before playing the majority of
it’s later spring schedule against Big 12 Conference
opponents.
In a policy change from previous years, admission is FREE
for all Texas regular-season home matches at the Penick-Allison
Tennis Center. The UT tennis facility is located on Trinity
Street – right before the parking garage at the corner
of MLK.
