Rumble on Red River

June 17

The Art of Boxing

Dixie Chicks

Boxing is a tradition that goes back to the time of the Greeks and has persevered to be a prevalent part of our modern society. This sport has undergone numerous changes over the centuries and has evolved into the phenomenon we know today. Don’t miss out when our own Texas version of boxing, the Rumble on Red River featuring Killeen’s Light Heavyweight Marcus “Too Much” Johnson and Super Middleweight “King” James Johnson, Jr., comes to the Frank Erwin Center on Saturday, June 17!

Boxing is regulated state to state so it is hard to say what the exact rules for a match are, but generally boxers follow some set standards. No ‘below-the-belt’ fighting, gouging or wrestling allowed in the ring. Boxers also have to use gloves (there was a time when bare-knuckled fighting was the norm). Boxers win the round when their opponent is deemed defenseless by a judge, the referee or both. The judge can call the match over by points or round victories and the referee (and or doctor) can call the match if there is a knock out (KO) or the fighter on the ground is rendered too injured to continue in the match.

Participating in the Rumble on Red River will be renowned fighter Marcus Johnson, whose world ranking is 154 out of 803. Though Johnson is only 20 years old he has a record of 8-0 with 7 KOs— this guy has put some pain on a lot of people in the past few years. He was the Olympic alternate in 2004 for Andre Ward and participated in several junior Olympics before he was even of age! Though the full fight card has not yet been released we at least know this will be a family affair with Marcus Johnson as the Main event and his big brother, James Johnson Jr. (23) as the Semi-main scheduled to fight in the ring. Johnson Jr. is 6-0 with 6 KOs—a little family rivalry perhaps?
