Renegades Extreme Fighting

June 9

Seriously Extreme

Dixie Chicks

There is no doubt that the Renegades are hardcore but did you ever wonder what they had to do to get like that? Ever wonder what makes Renegades Extreme Fighting, extreme fighting? Read on to find out but don’t forget to watch while they kick butt around the cage at the Erwin Center on Friday, June 9 at 8PM!

Renegades Extreme Fighting is a part of a field of fighting known as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Fighters utilize combinations of boxing, kickboxing, martial arts and wrestling to force their opponent into submission during the three rounds in the cage. Typically maneuvers are divided into two categories- striking and grappling. Striking is hitting with knees, kicking and punching while grappling is comprised of different holds- clinch, pinning, sweeps, etc.

Though MMA used to be known as ‘No Holds Barred’ fighting, some rules have been established for the safety of those involved. Universally illegal techniques are biting, eye-gouging, hair-pulling, fish-hooking and small joint manipulation; some that are more disputed and up to the discretion of the organization are elbows, headbutts and spinal locks.

Fighters train for years to perfect their techniques; they train in three specific areas- standing, clinch and ground fighting. Stand-up fighting, such as boxing, is to help with footwork, punching, etc. Clinch fighting, such as Judo or freestyle wrestling, is to help the fighter learn throws and takedowns. Ground fighting, such as Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, is to teach submission holds and more importantly how to avoid them when the opponent tries to maneuver them.
