The Black Watch and The Band of the Welsh Guards

February 24

They Wear It Well

To match the distinctive sounds of their pipes and drums, The Black Watch has a unique look as well. Their uniform is composed of several symbolic pieces; learn about them before coming to the show on February 24 at 7:30PM.

The Feather Bonnet - Originally worn as a simple bonnet with a few feathers or fur stuck into it, the bonnet has grown markedly through the ages. During the Victorian era, the bonnet reached its ‘full’ potential with real ostrich feathers. Today the feathers have been substituted for a synthetic material that looks like feathers, yet is surprisingly light.

The Red Hackle - The bright red hackle cannot be missed as it stands out in sharp relief against the bonnet. The red hackle is a symbol exclusive to The Black Watch. Though many stories surround exactly how and why it was awarded, it was made certain that only the 42nd Regiment was permitted to wear it by an Army Order in 1822.

Scarlet Doublets - Jackets worn by Highlanders that are decorated with white “Crown and Inch” lace and Inverness skirt flaps and wings. Drummers have a blue facing on theirs which designates royal status. Though they have a similar cut and style to the Drummers, Pipers wear Archer Green Doublets similar to those worn before 1914.
