Harlem Globetrotters

February 9

Brush Up on Your Globetrotter I.Q. Before
You Catch Them at the Frank Erwin Center!

For certain generations, the song ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ means the Harlem Globetrotters and their on-court comedy. A new book out by author Ben Green chronicles this extraordinary franchise and iconic, 80 year old American institution. ‘Spinning the Globe: The Rise, Fall, and Return to Greatness of the Harlem Globetrotters’ charts the story of the Globetrotters rise to fame, their place in basketball history, and their impact on the perception of Blacks in America. The Trotters revolutionized basketball and spread knowledge of the game before superstars like Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving and Michael Jordan came along.

The Trotter’s started in Depression-era Chicago. From backwoods obscurity to performing in over 117 countries around the world, the Trotters have a long and interesting history on their rise to become one of the most popular sports franchises in the world.

In his novel, Green surprisingly undercuts the reputation of probably the most highly recognized Trotter that ever was – Meadowlark Lemon – and celebrates legends from the 40’s and 50’s including Marques Haynes and Goose Tatum.

During the Meadowlark years, the team was honing its gags, but the players were also regularly competing against the nation’s best college players. The Trotters even beat NBA squads before the league became racially integrated. Today, the Trotters continue to compete with the best. Though they are entertaining, make no mistake that the Globetrotters are true athletes.
