Foo Fighters and Weezer
September 14

From Small Fan Bases to Arena Floors at the Frank Erwin Center

This month two highly recognized bands will bring their brand of rock to the Erwin Center. The Foo Fighters and Weezer will be here Wednesday, September 14. Yes, it may be a ‘school night’, but it’s not *every* night that you go to a concert where both bands are headlining on new albums. Foo Fighters fans and Weezer fans will be happy to know that their bands will be sharing equal time on stage since they’re splitting the bill on this tour.
It’s hard to believe both bands have been around now for about 10 years, and they both just released their fifth full-length album. Now almost a decade out from his post-Nirvana career, Dave Grohl and his bandmates released In Your Honor, an album Grohl says he hopes is his Physical Graffiti. Only time will tell if this album is passed on to the next generation, but it already does share one element of Physical Graffiti in that In Your Honor is also a double album. And while we’re on the subject of Led Zeppelin’s sprawling, epic recording, the legendary John Paul Jones himself makes an appearance on In Your Honor. The 20 songs on this album are divided in two. The first disk is straight-up, electric rock ‘n roll, while the second album features all acoustic songs.
The Foo Fighters recently revealed the details of their hair-raising new video for their forthcoming single, ‘D.O.A’. Director Mike Palmieri decided the look would be contrived inside a gravity-defying, rotating room. Palmieri previously worked with The Bravery on their ‘An Honest Mistake’ domino-inspired promo.
The video is, visually, nearly impossible to figure out. The Foo Fighters are strapped inside a room which rotates clockwise and counter-clockwise and was filmed with a stationary camera. Using this technique, Palmieri created the illusion that during the course of the song, the room completes one full 360 degree rotation.
“Halfway through the song, they’re completely upside down. So when you’re watching the video, it’s slowly turning upside down on you. You’ll see the band, and the camera is locked, but their hair is sideways at a 90 degree angle,” explains Palmieri.
Weezer is touring on their new album, Make Believe. In the band’s decade-long recording history, each of their four albums after their highly acclaimed debut album, Pinkerton, have been markedly different from each other. Make Believe has been described as the band’s brightest album. Ten years ago, Weezer fans were made when their sound was explosive guitars and tormented lyrics. Their fan base has seen and heard their many phases – but probably none of them expected them to put out an album that’s been described as ‘positive’ or ‘optimistic’. Who doesn’t like a feel-good concert?
Weezer also just finished shooting and editing a video for their new album. The ‘We Are All On Drugs’ video was directed by Justin Francis, a New York based director and cinematographer. Francis worked closely under DP Matthew Libatique on the highly acclaimed film ‘Requiem For A Dream’ and has also worked under Spike Lee.
Weezer is going to be visiting Mexico and Brazil this month for the very first time to promote Make Believe. They will also be touring Japan and Europe before they take a short break to recharge their batteries and hit the road to arrive at yet another fabulous destination – the Frank Erwin Center in Austin!
