#2 Texas Tips-Off
the Season Hosting 2005 Guardians Classic
Sixteen teams from sixteen conferences face off in the Guardians
Classic, college basketball’s biggest regular-season
tournament. The Texas Longhorns will host the 2005 Guardians
Classic Austin Regional Rounds as they set their sights on
a Final Four run in March. The winner of the Austin Regional
Rounds will go on to Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium
to meet the winners of the Iowa, Kentucky and West Virginia
Regional Rounds.
Samford, Southern and Sacramento State will enter the Erwin
Center on November 15th and 16th hoping to upset UT’s
quest for its first championship of the season. Tuesday’s
opening doubleheader features Sacramento State facing Samford,
followed by Southern playing Texas. Wednesday’s doubleheader
will include a consolation and regional championship game.
The Longhorns are coming off of a school-record 7th straight
NCAA tournament appearance. Head Coach Rick Barnes returns
four of five starters, including senior Brad Buckman, sophomore
Daniel Gibson, sophomore LaMarcus Aldridge and junior P.J.
Tucker. Buckman was a second team Big 12 selection while Daniel
Gibson was declared Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
The Guardians Classic was created in 2001 for the National
Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to promote its Guardians
of the Game program that emphasizes four core values: education,
advocacy, leadership and service. For more information about
