Texas Baseball Seeks More Titles
The defending Big 12 Champion University of Texas baseball team seeks to continue their conference dominance this month as they wind down the regular season. The Longhorns have used some stellar individual performances to try and keep their conference success going this season. Adrian Alaniz registered the 19th no-hitter in school history against Oklahoma last month. The pitching staff has been strong throughout the season compiling a 2.67 earned run average (ERA). Seth Johnston currently leads the team in hitting with a .397 batting average.
The guiding force behind the school’s recent baseball dominance has been head coach Augie Garrido, the man responsible for recruiting such stellar talent to UT. During his eight years in Austin, Garrido has become the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I baseball history while bringing in top 15 recruiting classes eight consecutive years. On his way to earning numerous accolades and honors, Garrido has implemented a different approach to the game.
Garrido is a combination of teacher and baseball coach. He believes that a ballplayer’s mind is the most useful edge over the competition and an essential tool in the game of life.
“It’s my job to help players find balance in their lives. I want to help them help themselves become what they want to be through the fundamentals of baseball. Baseball is nothing more than another classroom in the educational process. Really, baseball is a metaphor for life.”
Under Garrido’s leadership, the Longhorns brought home the National Championship in 2002. Texas will end its regular season and continue pursuit of another National Championship as they host in-state rival Texas A&M on May 21-22 at Disch-Falk Field. Texas is seeking to extend its NCAA record to 32 appearances at the College World Series this year. |
