Austin Wranglers

Football Isn’t Just for Fall Anymore

Not every football-loving city is as fortunate as Austin. When winter comes, the Austin Wranglers bring arena football to the Frank Erwin Center. Their 2004 inaugural season brought them an 8-8 record and they attracted more than 11,000 screaming fans to their home games throughout the season. The 2005 season is shaping up to be even bigger and better.

For those who don’t know about arena football, we’ll give you the breakdown. Arena football is not played exactly like regular football. In arena football there are four, 15-minute quarters. The field is half the length of a traditional football field and has eight-yard end zones. Eight players take the field for each team. With only 20 active players on each roster, many athletes play offense, defense and special teams, rarely leaving the field throughout the entire game. The scoring is similar to NFL, although two-point conversion attempts can be dropkicked, and field goals made by dropkicking are worth four points instead of the standard three. And much to their delight, fans are allowed to keep the ball if it goes into the stands.

The Wrangler’s 2005 schedule consists of eight home games and eight away games. On January 30th they will play their first home game of their second season in Austin, Texas against the Philadelphia Soul at the Frank Erwin Center.
