Gibson
Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout
Thursday, February 3

Love - Love Tennis? Come Out to
the Gibson Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout!
The fifth annual Gibson Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout
is coming to the Frank Erwin Center February 3. The Grand
Slam Jam Foundation will donate a portion of their proceeds
from this tennis extravaganza to the Hope Foundation, a San
Antonio based organization that supports clinical cancer
research all over the world. The Hope Foundation specifically
supports the research and work of the Southwest Oncology
Group, which is the largest clinical cancer trials organization
in the world.
This year’s Gibson Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout
will feature some people you may have heard of if you enjoy
tennis: Andy Roddick, Taylor Dent, Donald Young Jr. and Host
Jim Courier. But we don’t expect the list to end there,
as we are waiting for more special guests to be announced.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Andy Roddick flourished as a junior
player while training in Florida and turned pro in 2000 at
the age of 18. Andy lived in Austin as a youngster and returned
after his training to buy a home in November 2003. Roddick
is the youngest American in history to finish a year on the
Association of Tennis Professionals tour as number one. This
year he reached the final at Wimbledon but lost to Roger
Federer. You may have seen Roddick featured in People magazine
as 2003’s Sexiest Athlete alive.
Taylor Dent hails from Huntington Beach, California and
is another young and accomplished tennis player. Dent climbed
as high as number 22 in the ATP rankings in 2004 and played
for the American Olympic team in Athens in 2004 where he
was somewhat of a dark horse, reaching the semifinal match
unseeded.
Perennial Grand Slam Jam Host Jim Courier will also return
to Austin. Courier is one of the greatest American singles
players in history and is also a recognized musician. A standout
Davis Cup player over the years, Courier coached the 2004
American Davis Cup team with Patrick McEnroe in Seville,
Spain.
In the past, several sports and music icons have given
their time and talents to make this event a success: Andre
Agassi, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Lance Armstrong, Mike
Mills (REM) and Lars Ulrich (Metallica) have all participated
in the Grand Slam Jam. This year promises to be an outstanding
event, with more exciting guests to be announced soon!
