Steven Curtis Chapman

Saturday, April 23

A Concert of Contemporary Christian Rock

Steven Curtis Chapman has been one of the most prominent performers of contemporary Christian music since the late 80’s. His music is a cross between 70’s-style light rock and orchestrated pop.

Chapman was born in Paducah, Kentucky where his father owned a music store. He spent a lot of time hanging out at his father’s store where he learned to play guitar and piano. When he started college in Indiana, he was enrolled as a pre-med student. But soon after he started school he dropped out to pursue a music career in Nashville. He began working in a music show at Opryland USA and wrote songs and performed in his off-time. His songwriting was met with enthusiasm, most notably when gospel stars, the Imperials, recorded one of Chapman’s songs. Other gospel and country stars have recorded Chapman’s songs, including Sandi Patti, Billy Dean, Glen Campbell and Roger Whittaker.

Chapman signed with a Christian music company, Sparrow, in 1987. The song “His Eyes”, off of his second Sparrow album, hit number one and earned him the Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year award from the Gospel Music Association (GMA) in 1989. That year he also took home a GMA award for Best Songwriter of the Year.

By the mid-90’s, he wanted to appeal to a more mainstream audience and released “The Great Adventure”. The album earned Chapman a Grammy. Opening for Chapman is special guest Chris Tomlin. Tomlin’s most recent album, “Arriving”, is laden with guitar-driven pop melodies that were recorded in Austin. He will play from this album on Chapman’s 70-city tour. Of his touring companion, Tomlin says he feels a deep gratitude toward Chapman and laughs, “Yeah, I like to tell people Steven will be closing for us.”
