Gibson Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout

Thursday, February 3

Lance Armstrong and Ray Benson Join the Grand Slam Jam!

Only at the Frank Erwin Center could you watch six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and nine-time Grammy winner Ray Benson step away from cycling and strumming the guitar, respectively, to play a friendly game of tennis against some real tennis super-stars. Armstrong and Benson will be the special guests at the Gibson Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout featuring Andy Roddick, Taylor Dent, Donald Young and Host Jim Courier. These tremendously talented athletes and musician will play against each other for a great cause. The Grand Slam Jam Foundation will donate its proceeds to the Hope Foundation, a cancer research organization based in San Antonio, Texas.

Armstrong is not only a record holding winner of the Tour de France, but last December he was also voted Male Athlete of the Year for the third straight year by the Associated Press. Armstrong and Michael Jordan are the only two athletes to win three consecutive years since the honor was first awarded in 1931. Benson has become a Texas institution as the leader of Asleep at the Wheel, a band that has enjoyed a legendary four decade run in the music business. He has played with some of the most recognized and respected musicians in the business, including Bob Dylan, George Strait and the Dixie Chicks.

Though Armstrong has an outstanding cycling record and Benson just makes records, period, they will both have to work hard to best the competition at their own game! Roddick is the youngest American in history to finish a year on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour as number one and was the 2003 U.S. Open Champion. Dent climbed as high as number 22 in the ATP rankings in 2004 and played for the American Olympic team in Athens in 2004, reaching the semifinal match unseeded. At 14 years old, Young made history as the youngest player to ever take the boys’ 18’s title. Courier is one of the greatest American singles players in history.
