Austin Wranglers

Rules of the Arena

The Austin Wranglers enter the home stretch of their second season as a franchise looking to remain competitive in the Arena Football League standings. For those of you unfamiliar with arena football, there are many appealing intricacies and rules of the game that make the sport fascinating to watch.

The most unique aspect for fans familiar with the NFL is the field dimensions. The indoor turf surface measures 85 feet wide and 50 yards long with eight-yard end zones. The sidelines are formed by foam rubber padded boards that take the form of a hockey rink around the field. Rather than traditional goal posts at each end, there are large rebound nets that hang from the ceiling with goal posts in the middle. The crossbar is 15 feet high and the goal posts are 9 feet wide.

Kickoffs begin from the goal line and the receiving team takes the ball off the rebound nets before running downfield. Punting is illegal in the arena league so teams must go for it on 4th down or risk a field goal attempt through the narrow dimensions. Games are played with four 15-minute quarters, however the clock only stops for timeouts or out-of-bounds plays and incomplete passes in the last minute of each half.
