Leaping and Bounding into Austin
Lipizzaner Stallions were brought over from Europe to provide a family oriented arena attraction 35 years ago by producer Gary Lashinsky. Lashinsky has purchased the horses from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and the Piber Stud Farm. He has gotten technical advice from the former Vienna director, hence the reason much of the performance mirrors that prestigious program.
Lashinsky buys the horses when they are two to four years old. The next six to eight years are spent training them in dressage (harmony between horse and rider) as well as the hectic show environment. They must get used to traveling together and dealing with the lights, music, crowds, and applause. Some of the Lippizans keep up with the hectic road schedule into their early 30’s.
Walt Disney’s “The Miracle of the White Stallion” depicted General Patton’s rescue of the stallions during World War II and garnered attention and admiration for these animals around America. The Lipizzan show horses are still dazzling American spectators with incredible maneuvers in 2005. This unique breed has transitioned from a horse of war to a living form of equestrian art. The show maintains a traditional, yet entertaining performance which features a segment called the “Airs Above the Ground”. Spectators are treated to thrilling leaps and techniques once used to protect and defend riders on the battlefield.
The Spanish Andalusian, the ancestral forefather of the Lippizan, has a special presentation set to traditional Spanish music. The pride of Spain is responsible for founding many breeds known today. As their own breed, the Andulasian, named after a Spanish province, dates back to the 8th century with the Moorish invasion of Spain. As well as being seen in saddle, the rider performs all the maneuvers of the Grand Prix Olympic level dressage while guiding the horse through his paces.
The current tour features 12 to 14 stallions performing selected maneuvers with new music and choreography. This anniversary addition has a major emphasis on historical background of the horse. Whether you are a horse lover or not, this show is graceful and magical to witness.
