Harlem Globetrotters

Globetrotters Offer More Than Slapstick and Confetti

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters have proven they have more to offer than just speed-dribbling and antics. The Globetrotters established themselves as a formidable talent in 2003 victories against Michigan State and defending National Champion, Syracuse and recently challenged Summer Olympic gold medalists, Argentina, to a pay-per-view match up.

The Harlem Globetrotters began in 1926 in Chicago as the Savoy Five, a basketball team designed by Abe Saperstein to entertain audiences as they played. On January 12, 1998, they competed in their 20,000th career game, an historic feat yet to be matched by another professional sports team. The launch of the 2005 tour marks the 79th season of Globetrotters basketball.

In 1993, Mannie Jackson, a former Globetrotter, bought the team and became the first African-American to own a major sports team. As Harlem Globetrotter Owner and Chairman, Jackson revitalized the struggling brand and returned the organization to its roots as one of the premier professional basketball teams.

The Globetrotters rely on a roster of twenty-five well-conditioned athletes rather than a “star” system. The team consists of ex-NBA players, several college All-Americans, and International Pro-League stars. Their roster has featured world-famous athletes Wilt Chamberlain and Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

The Globetrotters is an organization dedicated to reaching out to the community on and off the court. In the past nine years, the team has donated over $10 million to charitable organizations across the globe as well as given their time to visit nearly 200 elementary and middle schools.

While they continually prove themselves in competition, the Globetrotters’ first aim is to entertain audiences. A Harlem Globetrotter’s game is an enjoyable experience for audiences of all ages, complete with record-breaking slam-dunks, ball handling tricks, and sidesplitting comedy. The goal of the Globetrotters is “that every fan will walk away with at least one autograph and a lasting memory.”
