Peter, Paul and Mary

Thursday, November 4

Peter, Paul and Mary: No Common Folk

In 1961, two men walked onstage wearing dark suits and carrying acoustic guitars. A woman followed, her long blond hair flowing behind her. The lights came on and an unexpected energy filled the room. The first strum of the guitar silenced the crowd and many held their breath in anticipation. Melodic harmonies ascended and bounced from the rafters, each echo more resounding than the last. The era of music of conscience had arrived and the world was introduced to Peter, Paul and Mary.

For years, the term “folk music” and Peter, Paul and Mary have been interchangeable. From their first album Peter, Paul, and Mary to this year’s Carry It On and In These Times, the group has challenged convention by staying true to their style and sound.

The group’s success stems from their musical chemistry and onstage presence. This chemistry results in the transformation of Peter Yarrow, Noel (a.k.a. Paul) Stookey and Mary Travers into the team Peter, Paul and Mary. Travers remarked, “Each of us has a talent that’s pivotal for the group. Peter is a patient and meticulous worker, especially when it comes to sound quality, and that commitment to excellence is what yields the best possible environment in which to be creative. Noel has a relaxed sensibility, and that’s a very calming influence when it comes to adjusting to difficult situations, which happen all the time. Of course, both are talented songwriters as well. I think I bring a spontaneity, an ability to connect with them emotionally and focus our attention on having a musical conversation. I believe that if we can have that conversation, then the audience will feel included.”

Peter, Paul and Mary came together at the dawn of Kennedy’s administration, during a different time and a different country. In their 43 years, they’ve outlasted most marriages and experienced four decades of change. Turbulent times inspired the groups early Top Ten singles “If I Had a Hammer,” “Puff the Magic Dragon,” and “Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.” The group’s more recent records still ring with messages of hope and activism. “Now more than ever, we need laughter not tears,” said Travers.
