Dolly Parton

Thursday, December 2

Hello, I’m Dolly!

Singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist and blond! With a resume like that there is no wonder why Dolly Parton is so successful and beloved. At the age of 13, Dolly was already recording and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. After high school graduation she left behind her hometown of Locust Ridge, Tennessee and moved to Nashville to pursue her dream of becoming a country music star. In no time Dolly had a recording deal with Monument records and released her first album. During the mid 1970s, Dolly established herself as a country superstar. Despite being typecast as a county and western singer, her hits made it to the pop and adult contemporary charts as well.

In 1977, Dolly received her very first Grammy award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the song “Here You Come Again.” In 1980 she appeared in 9 to 5, which brought Oscar nominations for the movie tune and Grammy awards for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for Dolly. Dolly has taken more than 20 songs to the number one spot. Her most recognized song is “I Will Always Love You.” This song was at number one on the country charts three times, twice for Dolly as a solo artist and once as a duet with Vince Gill. Whitney Houston also introduced the song to a whole new generation of fans when she successfully used Dolly’s song on the soundtrack for the movie The Bodyguard.

Dolly is now the head of Dolly Parton Enterprises, a $100 million media empire. She also founded a theme park in Tennessee, Dollywood, and works with the Dollywood Foundation to provide educational opportunities to children. Imagination Library is a program within the Dollywood Foundation that provides children a book each month from birth until age five. Two hundred and fifty-five communities from 34 states around the United States have adopted this program.

After some acting and producing projects, Dolly is back on the road on her most extensive tour in 20 years. The 2004 tour “Hello, I’m Dolly” will provide fans an unforgettable experience. She will be performing everything from “I Will Always Love You” to “9 to 5.” Dolly once said in an interview, “My music is what took me everywhere I’ve been and everywhere I will go,” and it’s her music that will bring her to the Frank Erwin Center on December 2.

Accompanying Dolly on the road is the new group, The Grascals, as her opening act. The Grascals were formed in Nashville by Terry Eldredge, Jimmy Mattingly, David Talbot, Jamie Johnson, Danny Roberts and Terry Smith. They will open the show with their own music and then join Dolly on stage for a few songs.
