Gibson-Baldwin
Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout
Friday, April 30 - 7pm

Grand Slam Jam Welcomes Two More
Tennis All-Stars In addition to the already stellar line-up of Martina Navratilova
and Jim Courier, two more tennis superstars have been added
to the roster of the Gibson-Baldwin Grand Slam Jam Tennis
Shootout.
John McEnroe and Corina Morariu will partake in the tennis and
musical festivities in Austin Friday, April 30 at the Erwin
Center.
The Gibson-Baldwin Grand Slam Jam Shootout has become an annual
Austin event that brings together world-renowned tennis talent
and musical powerhouses. In the past this sporting exhibition
has been preceded by performances from Endochine, Mike Mills
of REM, and Lee Roy Parnell. The Grand Slam Jam Tennis Shootout
pairs celebrities with professional tennis athletes in competitive
matches that are athletically impressive and immensely entertaining.
John McEnroe, one of tennis’ elite, has won 77 singles
titles and 48 doubles titles since turning pro in 1978. McEnroe
was ranked as the world’s Number One player for four consecutive
years from 1981-1984. In July 1999 McEnroe was inducted into
the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He retired in 1994 and
has since worked as a sports commentator for CBS sports, NBC
and the USA network covering some of tennis’ most fantastic
tournaments including the U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon.
McEnroe is most widely recognized and remembered for his loose-cannon
temper. At the height of his career, in the 1980s, McEnroe often
lost his cool, throwing rackets and having tantrums
on court.
Corina Morariu began playing professional tennis in 1994, at
age 16. She quickly moved up and joined the ranks of the world’s
best tennis players, ranking Number 28 in singles and Number
One in doubles, in May 2000. Morariu won the Wimbledon Doubles
Title with Lindsay Davenport in 1999. Morariu was born and raised
in Detroit and attended UCLA. In May 2001 she began chemotherapy
after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. One
year later Morariu returned to the tennis circuit, competing
on the WTA Tour in San Diego.
