Globetrotters Bounce into Austin
For 78 consecutive years, the Harlem Globetrotters have been
entertaining fans of all ages. But in 2003, in conjunction with
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige, the Globetrotters began
targeting a certain fan base in particular: children. On December
17, with Secretary Paige in attendance, team owner Mannie Jackson
announced an innovative school program geared toward character
education at the Friendship-Edison Charter School in Washington,
D.C.
The newly created CHEER program, which stands for cooperation,
honesty, effort, enthusiasm and respect/responsibility, will
involve Globetrotter players incorporating signature ball handling
skills with a CHEER basketball. The basketball will include
each of the character traits printed on the outside of the ball
and will be used as the key tool during assemblies.
Having tipped off the 2004 “Bigger, Better and More Fun” tour
on December 26, the Trotters are on a 220-game season, which
includes a stop in Austin on February 5. In addition to basketball,
the new character education initiative will allow the Trotters
to visit over 150 elementary schools and reach over 100,000
students in as little as three months.
