Madea's Class Reunion

March 26 - 27

Phenom Perry at the Head of the Class with Madea

Six years ago Tyler Perry didn’t know where his next meal was coming from. He was homeless and brilliant, starving and talented. Now one of Urban Theater’s most powerful voices, the 34 year-old playwright, director, producer and actor is bringing his critically acclaimed musical Gospel tour to Austin.

A New Orleans native, Perry’s first hit musical stemmed from a series of letters he wrote to himself in a cathartic effort to free himself from childhood pain. After a string of empty theaters, “I Know I’ve Been Changed” finally gained national recognition in 1998 after a sold-out performance at Atlanta’s famed House of Blues. Hailed as one of the most successful shows of its genre, “I Know I’ve Been Changed” sold out repeatedly in Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Miami.

In “Madea’s Class Reunion,” Perry takes on the roles of Madea Simmons, a 68 year-old foul-mouthed, gun-toting grandmother and Dr. Willie Leroy. Since January 2003, “Madea” has sold out twice in theaters along the East Coast and throughout the Midwest. In addition, Tyler has been nominated for the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role as Madea, making him the first Urban Theater actor to be nominated for such a prestigious award.
