Globetrotters
Get Into The Zone
The Harlem Globetrotters know basketball. The team has played
the sport for 77 years, competed in over 20,000 games, and lost
only 336 times. Known for their on-court prowess and athleticism,
the Globetrotters are professional athletes of the highest degree.
They play hard on the court, but train even harder to prepare
for the year ahead. The Globetrotters just finished their annual
training camp in Prescott, Arizona and tip-off their 2005 “World
of Fun” North American Tour this month.
The Harlem Globetrotters bring their “A” Game to
the court night after night. They keep airballs, bricks, and
double dribbles to a minimum while producing plenty of fun in
the form of alley-oops, boards, and skywalks. On offense, look
for the fallaway jumper from downtown as well as the finger
roll from the key. On defense, watch for the zone defense to
prevent those embarrassing bunny shots and look for the Globetrotters
to “clean the glass.” Check out these basketball
terms and watch for these moves as the team bounces into the
Frank Erwin Center on February 10.
Air ball: A missed shot that does not touch any part of the
rim or backboard.
Alley-oop pass: A pass thrown to a player who is running toward
the basket. The second player jumps, catches the ball in mid-air,
and dunks it before his feet hit the ground.
Board: A rebound or the act of rebounding.
Brick: A hard shot that bounces wildly off the basket or backboard.
Bunny: A very easy, uncontested shot.
Clean the Glass: When a rebounder swipes the ball off the glass
backboard, he is a “Windex man” who is “cleaning
the glass.”
Double dribble: A violation in which a player dribbles the ball,
stops, and then begins to dribble again.
Downtown: Far from the basket, a three-point shot.
Fallaway (Fadaway) jumper: A jump shot where the player jumps
somewhat backward while shooting, to make it more difficult
to block.
Finger roll: A shot close to the basket where shooter lets the
ball roll off the fingertips to the basket.
Key: The area that includes the free throw circle and free throw
lane; shaped like a keyhole.
Skywalk: To move laterally or “walk” while in the
air.
Zone Defense: A defensive strategy designed to cover areas of
the court rather than individual players.
