Celebrating 35 Years

On Nov. 29, 1977, the Frank Erwin Center opened its doors to the public for its very first event. The Texas Men’s Basketball team defeated Oklahoma 83-76 for the first game on its new home court. Since then, more than 27 million people have attended an event here, many with memories of their first concert, basketball game or graduation.

The Frank Erwin Center was built around Frank C. Erwin Jr.’s vision of creating an elegant, state-of-the-art facility that could accommodate a wide variety of events. A social building that would attract national caliber speakers, host a spirited basketball game, and easily be converted overnight for a concert. His cutting-edge ideas, forethought and commitment to The University of Texas prompted the Special Events Center to be renamed Frank Erwin Center in his honor in 1981.
